In our previous post, we delved into the world of hypersensitive skin conditions affecting children, such as eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. Now, let's explore how identifying and managing triggers can significantly improve their quality of life.
Let’s begin with our most common foe, Eczema breakouts -The Itchy, Scratchy, No- Wonderland!
Sir Scratchy Fabrics:
Avoid fabrics that feel like sandpaper such as wool or synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, rayon, spandex or rubber. Rough materials can irritate sensitive skin triggering an eczema breakout because these materials don’t breathe as well as natural fibres and cause overheating and sweating. What is the solution?
Lady Weather Woes:
Extreme temperatures—too hot or too cold—can make eczema worse. Why?
Too hot- stimulates a prickly, itchy feeling, causing sweating.
Too cold-humidity levels are low and the moisture in the air decreases, which causes dry skin.
So keep cool in the heat and cosy in the cold by wearing appropriate clothing!

Madam Soap Opera:
Forget dramatic soap operas; I'm talking about the sneaky chemicals lurking in your bathroom and kitchen—they're the real villains here! As someone who's had my fair share of skincare blunders (cue the embarrassing stories), I can't stress this enough. Here are some big no-no:
Say NO to Harsh Bath Soaps! Just the word "soap" makes me cringe. I can almost see some of you rolling your eyes and muttering, "Seriously?"
But hold on a sec—here's the scoop.
Most soaps have a pH level of 10-11, while your baby's delicate skin prefers around 5.5. That's a big gap that can throw off their skin's natural balance, wiping out the good and bad bacteria, making their skin more prone to infections.
Instead, go for options like Milk based bath wash or look for labels that proudly boast a pH of 5.5, like baby bath products (I swear by these—they've saved my skin!). Your little one will thank you, and your bathroom drama will stay on-screen where it belongs!
Wave GOODBYE to Chemical-Based Hand Soaps! Hand soaps don’t get much credit for causing a breakout, but these sneaky culprits, often hiding in cute bottles, are breakout masterminds. In just seconds, they can unleash a storm of itching, flaky skin, and redness.
So read those labels, folks! The secret to avoiding this skin nightmare is to always read all labels before your purchase.
(More on deep soap diving adventures in an upcoming post. Stay tuned.)
Doctor Chemical Catastrophes:
Say NO to Chemical-Based Laundry Detergents! Ever checked the label on those laundry detergents? Yikes! They’re packed with scary stuff like 1,4-dioxane (potentially carcinogenic, y’all), preservatives, artificial fragrances, dyes, and the ultimate skin villain: BLEACH. These bad boys can turn your fabric into a skin-aggravating monster. Even if you don’t touch them directly, those chemicals cling to your clothes like an annoying ex..
The alternative? Easy peasy! Opt for laundry detergents labelled “Sensitive Skin Friendly,” “Gentle,” or “Mild.” Plenty of baby-friendly options out there that get the job done without the itch!
Phew, this turned into a mini-novel, but hey, crucial info is crucial! Now, let’s dig into the delicious (and sometimes dastardly) world of diet.
Chef Foodie Follies:
Certain foods like nuts, dairy, eggs, shellfish, and veggies (yep, veggies!) can be sneaky eczema triggers. But here's the kicker – it's a personal game. You might react to all, some, or none. The best way to play detective is through trial and error. Keep an eye on those snacks, too!
Finally, here is our last trigger to wrap up our flare-ups.
Mistress Stress Mess:
Yep, even babies can feel stressed! Emotional highs and lows can bring on eczema flare-ups. Why? When stress hits hard (like your baby trying to nap during a noisy party, or when your tiny tot is dealing with constant chaos), cortisol goes into overdrive, putting the immune system on mute and turning up the inflammation volume across the tiny body!
Definitively a mess you don’t want on your hands.
So, be sure to keep your bundle of joy laughing, smiling and constantly relaxed and stress free. Remember, no disagreements in front of the baby. They hear and feel everything!
Well, folks, I hope you’ve enjoyed this adventure and found it as enlightening as a flash light in a blackout. I had a ball writing it and tried my best to keep it short and sweet, like a cupcake with extra sprinkles. Stay tuned for our next post where we dive into the world of Psoriasis Playmakers. Don't worry, I won’t bore you with the same old eczema triggers-just the itchy bits!
