Kid Skin Saga: Unravelling the Mystery of Skin Hyper sensitivity!

Updated: Aug 21

A curious baby underneath a blanket

Hello, super parents! Welcome to our cosy corner where we dive into the world of skin and sleep! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re on a quest to keep your little ones comfy, cosy, and itch-free. Kids with sensitive skin need extra TLC, especially when bedtime rolls around. Once upon a time, I was one of those kids and an overdose of TLC was just what the doctor ordered. What a feeling!

Today, we're unravelling the mysteries of three common skin conditions that can make bedtime a bit scratchy for our little ones: eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. We'll cover a basic overview of the causes, symptoms, triggers, and all the bits and bobs in the mix.

Don't worry, we'll keep things fun, interesting, and super catchy!

Warning some images may be disturbing to you.

Eczema: The Itchy Culprit! - Eczema is my name and itchiness is my game!

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition which makes skin red, dry, and super itchy. It’s like that uninvited guest at a party—it just doesn’t want to leave!

But what causes this pesky problem? Eczema is a bit of a mystery, but it's believed to be a mix of genetics, an overactive immune system, and environmental factors like pollen or pet dander to name a few. If mom or dad had eczema, there's a good chance junior might, too.

Triggers can include anything from dry air to certain fabrics or even stress.

*We’ll get into a more detailed trigger list in the next post.

What to look for?

  • Dry, sensitive skin

  • Intense itching

  • Red, inflamed patches

Psoriasis: The Overachiever of Skin Sensitivity

Next up, meet psoriasis. Imagine your skin cells throwing a party and inviting way too many friends. Psoriasis causes skin cells to multiply up to ten times faster than normal. This leads to bumpy red patches covered with white scales.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, which means the immune system is sending mixed signals, causing the skin cells to grow too quickly. Family history and certain triggers like stress and infections and cold weather can play a role.

What to look for?

  • Red patches of skin with thick, silvery scales that may itch or burn, commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, trunk, palms, and soles of the feet.

  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed

  • Itching, burning, or soreness

  • Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails

Ichthyosis: The Fish Scale Mystery

Ichthyosis might sound like a cool name for a sea creature, but it’s a dry skin condition that causes skin to become thick and scaly, much like fish scales.

It is usually inherited, passed down from one or both parents. It can also appear later in life due to other health conditions. The skin's natural shedding process is disrupted, leading to the build-up of scales. The severity can vary, from mild to severe and tends to worsen in cold, dry environments.

What to look for?

  • Dry, scaly skin

  • Flakes that resemble fish scales, visible on the front of the legs, back of the arms, scalp, back or stomach.

  • Thickened skin on the palms and soles of the feet

  • Rough bumps on the arms, thighs and buttocks often confused for acne blemishes

  • Itchiness and discomfort

  • Cracks in the skin that can lead to infections

Now you know so what can you do?

Now that we’ve met these common skin foes, let’s talk about why proper skin care is your best ally.

  1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Folks, I cannot stress this point enough. Keeping skin hydrated prevents dryness and irritation.

  2. Choose gentle, fragrance-free products. Look for labels that read For Sensitive Skin’, ‘Soap Free, ‘’Dermatologically Tested’ etc. Harsh chemicals can worsen symptoms.

  3. Keep skin cool. Sleeping in an air-conditioned room set to 22 degrees Celsius can greatly enhance comfort, especially with a ceiling fan rotating slowly. To maintain optimal humidity, place a small bucket of water in a corner of the room.

  4. Overheating can trigger itching and flare-ups, so, avoid being in the sun for too long. SPF 50 sunscreen is your friend here. It protects under the sun by blocking 98% of UVB rays, significantly reducing the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

  5. Wear soft, breathable fabrics. Hypoallergenic sleepwear plays a crucial role here—especially for our delicate darlings with hypersensitive skin. Hypoallergenic sleepwear made from natural fibres can make a world of difference.
